At Malvern St James, the safeguarding and wellbeing of our pupils lies at the heart of everything we do.

Our approach is rooted in genuine care and connection. Whether through our award-winning wellbeing initiatives, our collaborative work with parents or our dedicated pastoral and safeguarding teams, we are proud to provide a nurturing environment where every pupil can flourish.

Safeguarding at MSJ

Leading our outstanding provision is Mrs Wilkinson, Senior Deputy Head (Pastoral) and Designated Safeguarding Lead. Mrs Wilkinson works with a team of DSLs to make sure our pupils stay safe, following the latest government guidance and working with external agencies when applicable. Pupil safety is promoted through education, primarily delivered through the PSHEEC Programme and our MSJ Supporting Families offer which recognises the challenges that families can face in bringing up children. Award Winning Pastoral Care

At Malvern St James, friendships flourish across all age groups. Our pupils look out for one another and go out of their way to make newcomers feel welcome – it’s part of what makes our community so special. Our dedicated teaching and house staff work closely with families to make sure every pupil feels at home and supported throughout their time with us. As pupils move through the school, we guide them through each transition with care, helping them grow in confidence, independence and responsibility. We are proud to hold the Carnegie Gold Standard Award for Mental Health and Wellbeing, recognising our exceptional pastoral care and commitment to every pupil’s happiness and sense of belonging.

MSJ Buzz brings together all our pastoral initiatives, with The Hive at its heart – a calm, welcoming space where pupils can talk, reflect and recharge.

Here pupils can connect with our pastoral team, Pastoral Champions or the School Counsellor for tailored support when they need it. It’s a space designed for wellbeing, conversation and quiet moments of reflection.

Meet our Pastoral Lead

Hello, I’m Mrs Zinnia Wilkinson, and I’m delighted to be the Senior Deputy Head (Pastoral) at Malvern St James. I’ve been part of the MSJ community since 2008, both as a teacher and a parent, so I know just how special our school is. Alongside Enzo, our much-loved Pastoral Dog, I’m here to help every pupil feel happy, supported and ready to thrive.

Meet our Designated Safeguarding and Pastoral Lead

Hello, I’m Mrs Zinnia Wilkinson and I am proud to be the Senior Deputy Head (Pastoral) at Malvern St James. I have taught at MSJ since 2008 and have also been a parent so I understand the school well. I have extensive experience as a pastoral lead and alongside Enzo, our pastoral dog (who is happy to lay low for those who are not dog-lovers), I support all members of the MSJ community to achieve maximum health and wellbeing. When I am not in School, I am a private therapist and love to walk on the stunning Malvern Hills. Passionate about helping pupils develop life skills which will assist them in being competent and confident global citizens in their lives beyond MSJ, I recognise the importance of working with parents to ensure that our pupils are seen, heard and mentored to fulfil their potential.

Healthcare

Our Health and Wellbeing Centre provides round the clock healthcare as well as offering first aid, emotional support and an advice service. The School Doctor holds surgeries onsite for our Boarders each week and works closely with the Pastoral Team to assist pupils dealing with specific medical or pastoral issues.

Pupils with specific healthcare needs have an individual Health Care Plan which helps staff to provide a high level of care appropriate to each child. Healthcare staff will always contact parents if a pupil is admitted to the Health Centre and will work with external healthcare services if needed.

Mental Health Support

Our excellent School Counsellor works in school three days a week and timetables sessions to fit in with a pupil’s academic and extra-curricular commitments. While the School Counsellor may work with the Lead Healthcare Professional when a pupil feels this would be helpful, they can choose to keep the content of their counselling sessions confidential from school staff if they prefer. Any information that needs to be shared for safeguarding reasons will always be handled sensitively and in line with Keeping Children Safe in Education guidance.

Over 30 members of the staff body are trained as Youth Mental Health First Aiders. Boarding Staff and Heads of Year are experienced in supporting pastoral and mental health needs and will liaise with the Senior Deputy Head (Pastoral) to ensure a robust approach.

We also have Pastoral Champions, Senior School children voted by their peers and teachers as designated pastoral support pupils. They are trained to support their peers in collaboration with school staff to assist those who are struggling to access the support available. In the Prep Department, similar systems are underpinned by teacher-input.

Holistic Support

All our staff work together to ensure that every pupil has holistic care focused on developing life skills such as resilience, the ability to manage conflict appropriately, facing challenges and self-care. Pupils have the opportunity to work with members of the pastoral team, Pastoral Champions (a peer support team) or the School Counsellor to receive targeted and appropriate help when it is needed. In addition, this relaxing space provides somewhere to relax, reflect and recoup.

Spirituality

We are proud to be a vibrant, multicultural and multi-faith community. While our values are rooted in Christian traditions, we also place great importance on respect and acceptance for everyone’s beliefs, creating a space where every member of our school feels valued and included.

Our assemblies are a special time for the whole school to come together. Led by teachers, house staff, pupils and visiting speakers, they are moments to learn, reflect and be inspired. Pupils can also use our Multi-faith Worship Space for private prayer or group worship whenever they wish.

Spirituality is woven into everyday life at Malvern St James. Nestled in the beautiful Malvern Hills, our surroundings offer a sense of calm and a natural way to connect with the world around us. From Early Years onwards, we encourage pupils to experience ‘awe and wonder’ – those magical moments that spark curiosity and joy. Throughout the school, we look for opportunities to bring these moments into learning and daily life.

We celebrate the rich diversity of our community, with monthly highlights focusing on different cultures, beliefs and perspectives. Equity and inclusivity are central to all we do and students are encouraged to be their unique selves and individuality is always celebrated.

Our fabulous dining facilities host daily meals for Boarders, day pupils and staff who eat together at breakfast, lunch and supper. Our chefs use high quality produce, locally sourced where possible, and recipes from around the world. Specific dietary needs are incorporated, allowing those with allergies or bespoke diets to eat comfortably alongside their peers without emphasis on their requirements.

Malvern St James School holds the Gold award for the Healthier Choices Scheme. The gold level standard acknowledges the commitment to offering freshly prepared food which includes a range of fruit and vegetables, providing healthier options within the menu and achieving excellent food hygiene and safety standards, including the food allergen requirements.

Sport and Exercise

At MSJ we believe that a healthy mind is supported by a healthy body. Sports staff and Pastoral staff work together to ensure that all students find a way to complement their academic and social programmes with physical activity. We teach them about their changing bodies through PSHEEC and ensure that they know their bodies and can utilise them effectively.

Food and Nutrition lessons sit alongside academic PE and Biology lessons to provide pupils with the knowledge to understand the links between health and wellbeing and their own responsibilities to pursue holistic wellbeing.
