Meet Mrs Fowles

Senior Deputy Head

Fiona Fowles joined MSJ in 2018, having taught in all girls’ schools for most of her career. Inspired by her own teachers, she read Geography at the University of Durham and has a MSc in Soil Science from the University of Reading.

Educated in a girls school herself, she is a huge advocate for girls-only education as places where girls can unapologetically be themselves, supported and encouraged by the sisterhood!

She delights in seeing each girl realise her “girl-power” through hard work and being confident in who she is. Fiona is also a keen advocate of helping pupils connect with the natural world.

When not in school she enjoys hill walking, travel, watching rugby with her adult sons and going to the theatre.

MSJ Co-curricular

Clubs are run for pupils to develop their talents, discover new possibilities, encourage pupils to step out of the comfort zone and to have fun with their peers. Attendance is tracked and we value parental support in this regard. Staff know our pupils well and ensure that they have a healthy balance between academic work, co-curricular opportunities and relaxation. We expect all pupils to participate in a range of clubs throughout the year covering physical activity, expressive arts and more academic/social clubs. Soft skills such as teamwork, leadership, adaptability, creativity, confidence and time management are often best learnt through the co-curricular programme. By raising expectations and personal horizons, girls at Malvern St James grow in self-belief and confidence. They leave School poised and articulate, with the aspiration and skills to achieve in the challenging world that exists beyond School.

With over 90 clubs offered across the school there is something for everyone, and girls are encouraged to run their own clubs too. Most of the clubs have no charge and are delivered at lunchtimes or between 16:00 and 18:00.

Details are available for parents on the ISAMS portal at the beginning of each term

As part of the provision of co-curricular activities and opportunities at Malvern St James, we offer a programme of outdoor activities such as Woodland school in the Prep Department, campfires after school and overnight expeditions. As with all outdoor education it is hoped that a lifelong appreciation of nature and the outdoors is formed.

Girls are encouraged to take part these activities which take them out of their comfort zone. They work together in teams, discovering each other’s strengths and weakness and how to harness the best out of those taking part. They develop skills such as confidence and resilience enabling the girls to be better able to face the challenges of the real world.

Special three day residential trips are organised for Years 7 and 9, particularly timed for important stages of the girls’ school life. They serve to ‘break the ice’ and are designed to help the pupils get to know each other, forming new, strong friendships, and to work effectively with each other. The Year 7 trip goes to Bewdley and The Year 9 Residential goes to South Wales, where personal challenges, caving and canoeing the River Wye help learning, build up individual confidence, whilst emphasising the importance of teamwork. Both trips promote the importance of having fun as well.
