Why Support MSJ?

Malvern St James is at the forefront of girls’ education, continuing the traditions of its founding schools to provide the very best teaching and learning, combined with superb enrichment opportunities. There is something for everyone at Malvern St James: intellectual, sporty, creative, scientific, musical, dramatic; and a combination of all of these things. Every girl is different and we give our girls the freedom to find themselves. That’s why they are confident, capable and the kind of people you want on your team.

The School is committed to providing the very best teaching and learning facilities, a modern estate, and excellence across academic and enrichment disciplines; and to ensuring accessibility to the school for a diverse range of pupils by recognising outstanding talent regardless of financial means.

This means an investment programme in our buildings and our bursaries.

Much has been achieved already, funded through existing assets and revenue. Now we are looking to increase that investment so that we can produce a greater impact in a shorter timescale. So we are asking our Malvern St James community to share our vision and help us achieve it.

We do not have an endowment fund to draw on. We rely solely on the generosity of donors. Every gift makes a difference and we are very grateful to all of those who work with us in ensuring the best in girls’ education, now and in the future.

Ways of Supporting Us

Thank you to all of our donors for your amazing support, whether you give financially or with your time. You make Malvern St James the very special place that it is, and we are very grateful.

So much more can be achieved due to your commitment and investment: it really does make the difference.

To date, Malvern St James has been lucky enough to be supported by some generous donations from parents, alumnae, former staff and governors.

A legacy gift a few years ago from an Old Girl started our Founders’ Awards Scholarships, which are supported by a means-tested bursary. This has been topped up in the intervening period by others giving single donations, regular donations, making legacy pledges or through participation in the Leavers’ Deposit Donation scheme.

We are asking others in our community to join these donors to assist us in achieving the aims and ambitions laid out in Our Strategic Vision brochure.

Donations can be given to specific campaigns – such as the Founders’ Awards bursary campaign, which aims to provide fee assistance up to 100%, or to a capital project campaign (i.e. buildings), or at the discretion of the governors, or to another project in which the donor has an interest.

We are incredibly grateful to everyone who has previously given, and those who give now and in the future. Your gift makes a real difference to girls’ education.

Gift Aid

If you are a UK tax payer, you can make your donation go further if you gift-aid your donation, as well as claiming tax relief if you are a higher rate tax-payer.

By doing this, for every £100 you give, Malvern St James receives a further £25.

With gift aid, for every £100 gift, we will receive £125 and:

  • if you are a 40% tax payer you will receive £25 rebate, meaning for £125 we receive, you have paid £75
  • if you are a 45% tax payer you will receive a £31.25 rebate, meaning for £125 we receive, you have paid £68.75

Higher rate tax payers can claim tax relief on your self-assessment form by using HMRC form R40.

In order for your donation to be eligible for gift aid, you must confirm that you have paid or will pay an amount of income tax and/or capital gains tax which is at least equal to the amount of that that all the charities you donate to will reclaim on your gifts in any one tax year (April 6 to April 5). Other taxes such as VAT and Council Tax do not qualify.

We will hold your gift aid declaration on file, but please notify us if you wish to cancel it, change your name or home address, or no longer pay income tax and/or capital gains tax equal to the equivalent that Malvern St James will claim on future donations.

Gifts of Stocks and Shares

You are able to claim income tax relief on gifts to charity of most stocks and shares, whether you are resident or non-resident in the UK. This is in addition to the existing relief from Capital Gains Tax.

In order to calculate the amount of tax relief, you should deduct the value of your donation from your taxable income for the tax year in which the donation is made. The amount you can deduct is the market value of the shares on the day of the gift plus an incidental costs of disposing of the shares such as broker’s fees.

Donors can claim relief at their top rate of tax on their Self Assessment or Corporation Tax return.

For example:

A donor gives a gift of 2000 shares in a company, which he bought for £6,000 and now have a market value of £10,000. The broker’s fee, paid by the donor to arrange the transfer is £50. The tax deduction is calculated below:

Original Cost of Shares

£6,000

Current Market Value of Shares

£10,000
Broker’s Fee £50
Deduction Against Income £10,500

Assuming the donor is paying income tax at the higher rate of 45%, their income tax bill will be reduced by (£10,050 x 45%) £4522. This effectively means that the donation of £10,000 will actually cost the donor just £5528 after tax relief (£10,050 – £4,522).

The donor will also save the Capital Gains Tax that should have been paid on the increase in the value of the shares (from £6,000-£10,000) which is £4,000. The current rate of Gapital Gains Tax for individuals who pay above the basic rate of tax is 28%. Therefore, in effect, the donation has only cost them £4,408 (£5528 after tax releief (£10,050 – £4522) which is less than half of the value of the gift.

If you are interested in making a gift of stocks or shares, we advise you to seek specific advice from your tax or financial adviser.

Make a Payroll gift

Over 350 companies in the UK run payroll giving schemes and over 250 of these match (or more) the donations their employees make to a charity. Through payroll giving your donation is deducted from your salary before tax. Each £1 you give may only costs you:

  • 80p for basic tax payers
  • 60p for 40% tax payers
  • 55p for 45% tax payers

Your employer will process your donation, plus any additional employer giving, through their payroll Giving Agency. You do not need to report it on an HMRC Self-Assessment tax return.

You can check if your employer is registered in this scheme by contacting your HR office.

Many companies in the UK help boost employee charitable donations through a matched grant scheme. So for every £1 you pay, your employer also pays £1 to your chosen charity.

You can check if your employer is registered in this scheme by contacting your HR department.

If you do not feel that you are able to support us financially, there are other ways in which you can offer support to Malvern St James. One of the most popular is by giving your time to volunteer; this could be help with our archives, offering careers advice and mentoring services, taking up a role on the OGA Committee or donating time in another way. To discuss this, please contact Fiona Meredith.
