After a tough few weeks Year 13 Chemistry students, Aimee, Ruby, Faye, Valerie, Tina and Yue, celebrated the end of their summer assessments by making nylon!

This well-known experiment involves a solution of decanedioyl dichloride being floated on a solution of 1,6-diaminohexane. At the interface of the two liquids, the condensation polymer nylon forms and it can be carefully removed as a long thread.

The challenge for the girls, working in teams of three, is how long they can make this delicate fibre. We thought it perhaps a good thing that the nylon industry did not rely on MSJ for its supplies!
