This year, as part of our National Poetry Day celebrations, we invited Breis (pronounced breeze), a London based, high energy rap artist of Nigerian heritage, to MSJ. He performed live in assembly using call backs to engage the audience and include them as part of his music. He shared his lyrics, explained the hip-hop genre and also explained his engagement with this art form.

He was in school all morning and led workshops with Year 8, Years 5 & 6 and Year 7. In the sessions he performed more of his lyrics and provided groups with an understanding of how to build up their own verses and rhymes by explaining the mechanics of writing. Each group had a chance to write and share with the class.

His sessions were full of energy, enthusiasm and rhythm. These are some of the responses from the pupils involved in the workshop sessions:

“I felt all this energy he was giving. He is a really good rapper and poet. I loved when we made our own rap and I loved assembly”

“It was fun, I liked making a rap and listening to others rap their songs”

“The rap battle was great. I think Breis is cool”

“I think that Breis was very funny and very informative and I really enjoyed the workshop especially!”

“I really enjoyed our session with Breis because we learnt about how to creatively freestyle a rap.”

At the end of the workshops some pupils took the opportunity to buy his book Brilliant Rappers Educate Intelligent Students and have it signed. We also have a signed copy available in the library.

It was an uplifting and engaging morning that enabled pupils to explore their creativity through writing lyrics and raps.

Many thanks to the MSJ Friends who generously supported his visit.
