The Mandarin Speaking Competition, run annually by the British Council since 2003, will this year be held online due to the current Covid-19 restrictions.
This year Filelu, Year 11, will be representing Malvern St James in the intermediate category of the competition.
As part of the competition, she will perform for two minutes and answer three unprepared questions given in mandarin by a panel of judges. She then has to translate three sentences from English into Chinese. Filelu has put in a lot of hard work and preparation for this event and we hope she will make it past the regional heats and into the finals.
The competition is a great, fun opportunity for students to practise and improve their Mandarin Chinese language skills. Taking part in the competition increases students’ motivation for learning the language. It develops vocabulary and improves pronunciation, raises confidence for oral examinations, encourages students to interact with their classmates and inspires students to discover more about Chinese culture.
