Children’s author, Chris Smith visited MSJ with Authors Aloud to talk to Prep pupils about his new and exciting book, ‘Frankie Best Hates Quests.’

Year 5 and Year 6 classes from Malvern Parish came along to listen to Chris Smith’s talk where he explained what had inspired him to write the book. Chris also spoke about the adventure stories that he had read over the years, that had stayed with him and had added to his inspirations for his own book. Pupils learned about all the steps they need to write their own exciting adventure quest and touched on Joseph Campbell’s ‘The Hero’s Journey’ theory.

Pupils got involved in several exercises which allowed them to realise their own potential at creating their very own adventure story. In one exercise, Chris drew a map and then asked the audience to suggest places, names and features which were then drawn onto the map. Pupils created an island with a candy floss volcano, a castle, and a resident dragon.

Chris then read extracts from ‘Frankie Best Hates Quests’ so children could get a better understanding of Frankie, the main character. They gave an audible gasp when they found out that she did not have Wi-Fi access where she was staying in the story.

Near the end of Chris’ visit, Chris answered questions from the audience, posed for photos and signed books. Pupils had such a fun time during Chris Smith’s visit and cannot wait to find out what happens to Frankie next. They commented:

“He was really funny and was the highlight of my week because I now want to write a book.”

“It was amazing to see him draw and his drawing tips”

“His writing tips were really helpful!”

“We got to ask lots and lots of questions! I loved his visit and I wonder what he will write next.”
