Year 10’s Business Enterprise students enjoyed an engaging afternoon at Francis of Malvern, where they gained hands-on experience in retail business operations. Under the expert guidance of Elinor Gillen, our girls explored every aspect of the sales process. They put their mathematical skills to work, learning about markup calculations, cost analysis, gross versus net profits, stock management, and sales promotion strategies.
The highlight of the afternoon saw them role-playing as furniture and bed sales representatives, complete with sales order forms and scenarios of different types of buyers utilising their newly acquired knowledge to the test. They had the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the product range, even testing out the furniture and beds in the showroom (as you can tell from the photo, the hypnos mattress was very comfy). This immersive experience provided valuable insights for the girls as they prepare to reopen the school shop.

Tia S had this to say about her experience “Our trip to ‘Francis of Malvern’ for Business Enterprise was a new and very exciting experience for me, as I had never thought deeply about what goes on in the background of a business. During our afternoon, we learnt about how important it is for a business to not waste their profit and how precisely you have price an item to sell after you buy it from another supplier. I thoroughly enjoyed my day out at Francis of Malvern and feel I gained a lot from it.”
The practical session proved to be both educational and inspiring, giving the Year 10’s a real-world perspective on retail business management and we thank Francis of Malvern for their hospitality.
