We were thrilled to welcome widely published and multi slam winning poet Holly Winter-Hughes to MSJ in celebration of National Poetry Day.

Holly is a poet, researcher and therapeutic writing facilitator. Her work has been commissioned by organisations including Apples & Snakes and Arvon and she has performed widely across the UK at festivals and on BBC platforms. Her latest poetry collection, How to Leave a Body, was published in May 2025 and explores themes of embodiment, narrative, and transformation.

In a memorable school assembly, Holly shared her personal journey into poetry—how she discovered writing as a way to voice emotions, explore identity, and give shape to what we sometimes carry inside. She spoke with honesty about how poetry became a channel for healing and expression before she shared some of her work on stage.

Workshops with Years 5–9

After the assembly, Holly led creative writing workshops for Years 5 & 6, Year 7, Year 8, and Year 9. She offered thought-provoking prompts encouraging pupils to connect their  emotions aand selves with the landscape and animals. Her style of facilitation encouraged all students to look inside, trust their voices, and experiment with new ideas. She definitely inspired student to unlocking and discover stories they didn’t know they had.

Her visit reminded us of that the power of poetry has to uncover, heal, and connect —and that every student can discover their voice.

In Science this term, Year 5 are studying ‘The Earth and Space.’

On Thursday 23 January, Year 5 joined Mission Control on an exciting Earth observation mission to view our beautiful planet from space and visit the orbiting satellites that are helping us combat climate change.

This immersive, interactive, online show, catapulted the girls into a space-themed STEM adventure, blending the thrill of space exploration with the crucial role the UK Space Industry is playing in combating the climate crisis.

Along with over 500 other schools across the country, who were all online at the same time, the girls got into the characters of aspiring space engineers and scientists. Via an online voting system, the girls decided the path of an Earth Observation mission, navigating orbiting satellites, whilst discovering a few surprises along the way. At the end, the girls were involved in a live question and answer session, which they found fascinating.

(The event was presented by Spacefund.co.uk, ‘Spaceship Earth’ and was delivered as a live broadcast via Microsoft Teams Live.)

On a sunny Thursday afternoon, 20 June 2024, the Malvern St James community gathered for a special occasion: the unveiling of “Idara,” a beautiful Wellbeing Bench created by award-winning local sculptor Simon Probyn. This unique piece of art, made from galvanized steel tubes, was generously commissioned by current parents Mr. Unuigbe and Ms. James to honor their daughter Aita’s four joyful years at MSJ.

The name “Idara,” meaning ‘joy’ in Igbo and ‘community’ in Urdu, perfectly encapsulates the spirit behind this thoughtful gift. It symbolizes the joy and community that Aita experienced and contributed to during her time at MSJ. The bench is not just a piece of art but a space for pupils and staff to sit, chat, and contemplate.

Ms. Sedo James, alongside a group of girls, staff, and friends of the school, cut the ribbon to officially unveil the sculpture. She expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the school, saying, “We are delighted to gift the school with this sculpture in recognition of Aita’s time as Pastoral Prefect of Malvern St James. I want to sincerely thank you for the care and encouragement you have shown to my daughter.”

The Story Behind the Bench

The bench was a collaborative effort between Simon Probyn and MSJ, involving Year 11 and Sixth Form Design Technology pupils during Wellbeing Week. Simon, whose impressive work includes a monumental piece near Tower Bridge called Thames London Perch, worked closely with Aita to design and create the bench. The project involved not just the artist but also the pupils making it a true community effort.

As part of Wellbeing Week, a group of Year 11 pupils visited Simon’s workshop to assist in the creation of the sculpture and learn about the welding process. Esme, one of the participating pupils, shared her experience:

“We went to Simon’s workshop as part of a project for Wellbeing Week. We are creating a sculpture as a bench and bee hotel to sit in our school for spring 2024. We were able to go to the workshop and help make parts of the sculpture as well as learning more about how welding works. Helping to create the structure helps our well-being, being outside and doing something physical that focuses the mind helps you to connect, also giving you a sense of pride to help make and process behind such a large and significant sculpture which will be enjoyed by many people in the time to come. This was an amazing experience on how to weld and seeing the process of creating a sculpture for Wellbeing Week.”

A Unique Addition to MSJ

The Wellbeing Bench was installed during Wellbeing Week, with the MSJ community invited to add personal touches. Members of the community placed pieces of bamboo into some of the sculpture’s tubes to create ‘bee hotels’ in the upright sections of the bench. These bamboo pieces, glued tightly in place and drilled to create a hollow centre, are intended to provide refuge for local bees. Additionally, contributors were encouraged to write a wish or the name of someone special on their piece of bamboo before adding it to the sculpture, making it a deeply personal and meaningful installation.

Already, the bench has become a beloved spot for pupils and staff to gather, enjoy the sunshine, and enhance their wellbeing. We hope the bees will soon find their new hotel as welcoming as the MSJ community finds the bench.

On Thursday, 20th June, MSJ launched its first-ever Regatta. The trail was set for pupils to complete across the top of the Malvern Hills, with a run through town for the big finish in the Quad. ????‍♀️

48 pupils competed on behalf of their respective Ship, with each Ship trying to win tokens. Tokens were awarded for finishing places in the race, teamwork, fancy dress outfits and even finishing in style! Each Ship put in tremendous effort, making the race a true spectacle.

The whole school gathered to cheer on every competitor as they finished in the Quad. The excitement was palpable, with everyone eagerly anticipating who would enter the Quad first. The morning was filled with a special atmosphere and showcased the incredible MSJ community spirit.

Congratulations to Daring, who were the overall winners! ????????

My name is Roseanna, I’m in Year 12 and I joined MSJ at the age of four. I remember Pre-Prep as a vibrant place, filled with colour, laughter and discovery. The teaching is completely immersive and we learned through play; I have such vivid memories of hatching butterflies in the classroom and singing on the way to Woodland School. It left a lasting impression and gave us all such an enthusiasm for learning. It’s a nurturing environment where personalities are encouraged and friendships blossom.

Music, dancing, and play filled our days, making the learning process so enjoyable that we didn’t even realise we were learning. There was always a theme in the classrooms, and we had many dress-up days, transforming into pirates, princesses, mermaids, and everything in between.

I formed many of my core memories in Pre-Prep, whether it was in school plays, playing the donkey in the nativity, or having snowball fights. There was always something to look forward to. One of my earliest memories was when I was scared of jumping in the swimming pool – my teacher jumped in with me whilst wearing all of her clothes, to help me overcome that fear.

One of the best things about Pre-Prep is the incredible support and dedication of the teachers – it’s something special, and something that is continued throughout the school. From Reception, they instil a sense of confidence, enthusiasm and determination in every one of us, encouraging us to flourish and discover our passions and talents.

I remember in Year 1, I did my first drum solo in front of the whole school. I wore a pink fairy costume, and I could barely reach the cymbals. Everyone was so incredibly supportive and it created a sense of confidence which I still have today. I’ve maintained my passion for music and play on that same school drum kit. I know that Pre-Prep has had such a positive, formative impact on my personality and has shaped me into the person I am today.

It’s an environment where everyone thrives – we were all so different but everyone was encouraged to be kind, be ourselves and be enthusiastic. There’s now a group of us in Sixth form, who have been here from day one, now aspiring lawyers, sportswomen and scientists.

I think it’s a huge advantage to be in an all-girls environment from the start. The sisterhood here is strong and develops as you move through the school – relationships are endorsed across all years. When I was in Pre-Prep, there were lots of older girls who I looked up to and used to wave to every morning, and now I’m one of those girls who Prep pupils wave to.

In Pre-Prep, I loved Maths, Music and English most, and these are the subjects I’m studying at A Level. I’m hoping to read English at university and then do a Law conversion course. As a Music and Academic Scholar, and someone who takes part in a myriad of clubs, ranging from Debating to Choir, I find that there’s always something to be excited about, just as there was in Pre-Prep.

I can’t emphasise enough how special and vibrant this place is. It’s a magical place to grow up and holds a special place in my heart – I hope that it will for your daughters too.

Children’s Mental Health Week is an annual event dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of mental well-being in young minds.

At MSJ, we pride ourselves on our fantastic pastoral provisions, while always expressing the significance of taking steps to take care of our own mental health. During this week, ‘an array of activities was offered’ around school, all with the sole purpose of supporting and providing a fun yet effective step in educating ways to support mental health and wellbeing.

Mrs Wilkinson, MSJ’s Director of Pastoral Care, who organised all activities for this special week, commented:

“Children’s Mental Health Week has brought a plethora of additional fun to the extra-curricular timetable at MSJ. From chalk drawing in the Quad to Yoga and knitting to Circus Skills, pupils have had the opportunity to get involved in lots of well-being activities including ice cream eating and the whole school Pancake Races! I’m so excited about judging all of the Photography Competition Entries over the half-term break and we are all looking forward to taking some ‘time out’ on the newly installed Wellbeing Bench, sponsored by the parents of our Pastoral Prefect, Aita.”

Monday

The week started with a Children’s Mental Health Week assembly where pupils were reminded of the importance of self-care and making it a priority during our busy lives.

Pupils attended the ‘Journaling Feelings’ session where they used the time to express their thoughts and feelings through the power of paper and pen. Knitting was another class that enabled them to focus on the creative activity and quiet their minds.

Yoga was also on offer during the afternoon, an exercise that creates a healthy emotional balance. It calms the mind and relaxes the body, but has also proven to benefit a better night’s sleep,  Alongside this activity, Circuit Sessions and Dance Workshops were also available for pupils to take part in.

Tuesday

Pupils were able to take part in an MSJ Fun Run at break time over at the Sports Field, and the girls and staff competed against each other. Lots of fun was had by all who took part, including the spectators.

At lunchtime, pupils tried their hand at seed planting, which took place in the Quad. Different seeds were available to choose from with plenty of plant pots and soil. The pupils got a lot of enjoyment in collecting their soil, planting their seeds, and watering them for the MSJ Prep Garden. This was a perfect activity to try something different, contribute to the envirinment, relax the mind and spend some time with friends.

To get their imagination flowing, some of our younger pupils tried their hand at Chalk Drawing. This proved very popular for the girls who enjoyed being out in the fresh air creating various colourful works of art.

Wednesday

The Girls took part in the Annual Ships Pancake races competition. The whole school gathered in the Sports Hall which was filled with excitement from all the girls who took part and cheered for their respective Ships. The finale of the Event involved each Ship Captain taking centre stage to see who could flip their pancake the highest!

In the afternoon we were lucky enough to have the expertise of a local circus performer who taught the girls some amazing circus skills including plate spinning and juggling.

Tasty Treats on Thursday

A chocolate tasting activity on Thursday challenged pupils to identify different brands of chocolate by taste alone, then in the afternoon staff and pupils were treated to an on-site ice cream van, which proved to be the most popular activity of the week.

Friday

As part of Mental Health Awareness in general, the School has had the opportunity to work with local Sculptor Simon Probyn in creating a wellbeing bench.

On Friday, members of the MSJ community were invited to place pieces of bamboo into some of the sculpture’s tubes to create ‘bee hotels’ in the upright sections of the bench. Glued tightly in place and drilled to create a hollow centre, we hope that the bamboo will provide refuge for local bees in the same way that pupils and staff can relax on this picturesque bench. To add a personal touch, we have suggested that those adding pieces of bamboo may like to write a wish or the name of someone special to them on their piece of bamboo before adding it to the sculpture – it promises to be a very special addition to our beautiful school setting.

Friday was non-uniform day and we also held a photography competition. In the morning the Year 4 prep girls held an Inspiring assembly titled “I’m happy to be me” which included some wonderful quotes:

“Happiness will never come to those who fail to appreciate what they already have!
In other words, be happy with what you’ve got”!

“If you want to be happy, be”!

This January, we welcomed 20 bright young 9-16 year old girls from Dipont Education in China, for an enriching journey through British culture. From exploring iconic landmarks in London and immersing themselves in the world of William Shakespeare in Stratford, to admiring the historic buildings of Oxford University and taking serene walks on the picturesque Malvern Hills, every moment was filled with adventure and discovery. Even simple pleasures like enjoying fish and chips in the Winter Gardens became cherished memories.

Inside our classrooms, they delved into exciting lessons like Design Technology sparking creativity, and Food and Nutrition to tantalise their taste buds. Their enthusiasm was infectious, taking every opportunity to absorb as much as they could from the enriching curriculum on offer at MSJ.

In the boarding house, activities and friendships were made, language barriers were broken and much fun was had. The high rope and zip wire challenges at Go APE in the Wyre Forest encouraged everyone to break out of their comfort zones with the support of our close-knit community of girls and staff.

As they bid farewell at Gatwick Airport, our Dipont guests were full of happy memories, reminding us of the profound bonds forged during their stay.

At the end of a busy but exhilarating few weeks, we celebrated all the achievements of these young women with an MSJ Graduation Ceremony, where each pupil received a certificate presented by the Head, Dr Lloyd. Special guests attended including Mrs Fowles, Senior Deputy Head, and governors and prefects. It was the perfect way to bid farewell to this fantastic cohort

MSJ Boarders have had a whirlwind of excitement so far this term; from adrenaline-fueled days at Alton Towers and riding the water on paddle boards to some laid-back retail therapy in Cheltenham. It was a term filled with diverse activities, here is a recap of their adventures.

Alton Towers- A thrilling adventure

The term kicked off with a bang as the pupils embarked on a day of exhilaration at Alton Towers, one of the UK’s premier amusement parks. With an array of thrilling rides and attractions, it was an adrenaline rush like no other. The laughter, screams, and shared excitement created unforgettable memories and strengthened bonds among the girls.

Paddle Boarding – Balancing on the water

The girls decided that they would like to try their hand at paddle boarding. So ventured to the Oxfordshire countryside. This serene water activity allowed them to embrace the calmness of the water while testing their balance and coordination.

Karaoke night – Unleashing the hidden diva

Karaoke night was a perfect opportunity for pupils to showcase their singing talents and have fun with their friends. Girls living in Austen are able to make use of the school facilities – a perk of living in the main school building – and belted out some classic tunes with the help of the projector and sound system in Lawnside. It was an evening filled with music, laughter, and unforgettable performances.

Taskmaster – A Game of Challenges and Fun

The girls took on the challenge with enthusiasm and humour as they embraced the tasks and worked together to conquer and solve unique puzzles and challenges, held in York Hall.

Cheltenham Trip: Retail Therapy and More

In need of some retail therapy, the pupils embarked on a trip to Cheltenham. This charming town provided the perfect backdrop for shopping, exploring, and even crazy golf! The day ended with a special trip to the cinema.

Outdoor Team Building Trips

MSJ organised some exciting outdoor team-building trips for different year groups during the first week of term in September. These experiences were incredibly valuable for the pupils, helping them develop important life skills and build strong bonds with their peers. Here’s what each of the year groups got up to.

Year 11 tested themselves at Manor Adventure

Manor Adventure is an outdoor pursuits centre based in rural Shropshire. Pupils engaged in activities like rock climbing, kayaking, and orienteering. These activities challenged the pupils both physically and mentally, promoting teamwork and problem-solving.

Year 10 took on the challenge at Aztec Adventure

Aztec Adventure situated in the village of Upton Warren near Bromsgrove offered a unique set of outdoor water-based activities and challenges tailored for our year 10 pupils. These experiences were designed to help pupils develop leadership skills and build confidence.

Year 9 ventured to Gilwern, Wales

Gilwern, in the picturesque Welsh countryside, offered a beautiful backdrop for their outdoor adventures. Year 9 pupils had the opportunity to participate in activities like hiking, camping, and water sports, creating a sense of camaraderie among them.

Year 7 experienced the Frank Chapman Centre

The Frank Chapman Centre is set in 90 acres of beautiful ancient oak forest and provided Year 7 pupils with a taste of outdoor education and teamwork. Activities focused on building communication skills and self-confidence in a fun and safe environment.

Prep confronted  the Boundless Outdoors Centre

MSJ Prep had a memorable experience at the Boundless Outdoors Centre in Malvern, enjoying a mix of educational and physical activities pushing them to their limits whilst having lots of fun!

MSJ Minis Trekked up the Malvern Hills

Trekking up the Malvern Hills was both a physically challenging and rewarding experience for the youngest pupils. A great way for them to experience and grow a love for nature and outdoor activities.

Overall, these outdoor team-building trips provided MSJ Pupils with a chance to learn important life skills, build lasting friendships, and create memorable experiences. Such activities can have a profound impact on their personal growth and development.
