SIXTH FORM
Freezing Fieldwork for Year 12 Geographers!

Mrs Hutton has organised and participated in many field courses and adventurous trips during her teaching career, including leading school parties across Icelandic glaciers, through cold and icy lava tubes and over high altitude Bolivian mountain passes. However, despite all of these experiences, she has never experienced fieldwork as extreme as that undertaken by her L6th Geographers in North Wales last weekend. The party of 11 tough girls endured freezing and wet conditions on Saturday to complete their river studies fieldwork, needed for their AS exam. As you will see from the photographs, the conditions were a just a little challenging. Despite a few understandable grumbles, they got on with the work and did not mutiny! They were also able to see the funny side of it later and Mrs Hutton was proud of their MSJ ‘fighting’ spirit. The group was rewarded with a fantastic days walking on Sunday where they experienced the magnificent post glacial scenery of Snowdonia.
Ellie Doughty said, ‘It was a really amazing experience and has been so useful towards the exam. I would have loved to walk even more. The staff were very nice and our guide, Rachel, was so enthusiastic.’
Imogen Gloag agreed, ‘I really enjoyed both days. It was very interesting to see what the landforms actually look like, rather than an image in a text book, and it definitely made me understand it better. Walking on Sunday was definitely a highlight and our guide, Rachel, was lovely’.
The trip was a great success due to the girls’ gutsy attitude, great sense of humour and willingness to rise above adversity. It was a character-forming experience and in life you always learn most from and always remember most clearly, the challenges that you have confronted and overcome. Well done L6th! Thanks also go to Mrs MacDonald and Miss Cole for embracing the adventure too!
