SIXTH FORM
British Mathematics Olympiad Success - a report by Mrs Winwood

On a very cold and snowy Thursday back in December, 6 Malvern St James students sat the British Mathematics Olympiad paper 1. Even to qualify to enter this paper, they had to be among the top one percent of those who sat the Senior Mathematics Challenge earlier in the term. This achievement alone is over 30 times more exclusive than gaining a Grade A at A level. The girls had 3 and a half hours to write full and rigorous proofs to 6 problems.
We have just received the results and they are amazing.
Lucy Cui and Jean Wang in Y13 were awarded Certificates of Participation, placing them in the top 800 students in the country. Compare that to nearly 80 000 students sitting Maths A level. Both girls have offers from Oxbridge for 2011.
Rannie Ding in Y13 was awarded a Certificate of Distinction, placing her in the top 350 students. Also gaining a Certificate of Distinction, but in addition qualifying for the next round of the British Mathematics Olympiad, is Daisy Zhang in Y12.
Tracy Huang in Y13 was awarded a Certificate of Distinction and a Silver medal as she was placed 40th in the whole country. Her place at Oxford to read Mathematics is well deserved.
The best performance in the school though, came from Zoe Xu in Y13 who also was awarded a Certificate of Distinction and a Silver medal, but was 32nd in the country. This is a really exciting achievement. Zoe has a place at Cambridge to read Mechanical Engineering.
Both Tracy and Zoe have qualified for the next round of the British Mathematics Olympiad.
The Mathematics Department are extremely proud of these six girls. We are thrilled by the best set of results ever in this national mathematics competition.
