Food Technology Students Go Organic

The year 10 GCSE Food Technology students made a trip to Over Farm in Gloucester to learn about sustainable farming. The girls visited the fields where the crops are grown and were able to pick pumpkin, beetroot, marrow and courgette direct from the fields to take home and use to create lots of delicious dishes! They then completed a food miles survey in the farm shop where the produce is sold, only a couple of hundred metres away from the fields where they are grown. The girls also saw the free range hens and outdoor reared Gloucester Old Spot pigs who reside in the newly planted woodland on the farm. At the end of the trip, there was an opportunity to quiz the farm owner, Rob Keene, on sustainable farming. The girls will now be able to put their knowledge of free range, organic, local and seasonal produce, to good use when designing food products which are people, animal and planet friendly.
