Celebrating National Science and Engineering Week

Malvern St James celebrated NSEW by involving staff and students in a variety of activities, including competitions, a lecture and quiz. The staff changed their names to famous Scientists for the week and a quiz was held requiring girls to match up the Scientist with their discovery or invention to earn extra Ships points.

On Monday, a team of six Year 10 girls represented the School at IBM's Blue Fusion Competition. Anna Ying, Harmony Chan, Isobella Bradshaw, Sophia Pelusi, Saskia Osterloff and Rebecca Evans took part alongside 14 other teams, tackling computer-related activities which focused around National Science and Engineering Week's theme of Communication. MSJ were placed 6th, a real testament to the girls' talents and teamwork.

Lunchtime science demonstrations took place on Tuesday and the limited tickets were snapped up quickly. The girls were entertained by some very vigorous and noisy chemistry and physics experiments.

That evening a lecture was given by Dr Helen Heath, Director of Studies for the University of Bristol School of Physics, entitled ‘The Science of Ice Cream'. The lecture was both fun and informative, with staff enlisted to help with the spectacular demonstration using liquid nitrogen.

Almost 150 people attended, including representatives from the Institute of Physics, with everyone able to enjoy ice cream after the lecture.
