Olympic Spirit Comes to MSJ

Olympic Spirit Comes to MSJ

On Tuesday, June 21st 2011, Malvern St James Junior Department hosted the third GSA Midlands Junior Olympics Event. This multi-sport activity day, for Years 3 and 4, was our most successful Olympics yet! 6 schools were represented by nearly 130 children, who were divided into 16 National Teams for the day. Each team had representatives from every school, engendering a generous and sporting spirit throughout.

The day started a little uneasily, with everyone eyeing up the ominous clouds as a group of Year5, 6 and Sixth Form girls set out the eight competitive events. However, as the first schools arrived, the weather improved and all breathed a sigh of relief!

The attending schools were: St Dominic's Brewood, Roch House, Dodderhill, Haberdasher's Monmouth and Kingsley, as well as our own MSJ girls. The event was a lively and fun mix of track and field events, with the 600 metres marathon and the Bean Bag relay proving notable highlights!

Although a brief shower of rain meant an early lunch, the sun was definitely in attendance for the final events and competitors were able to enjoy a well-earned rest whilst the points were tallied.

Eventually, awards were presented for the three top performing countries overall, as well as the three top performing individuals. We also gave an award for the top country in each event. The Gold performing country was Spain, whilst Nigeria claimed Silver and Brazil the Bronze. Mrs Woodhouse was able to witness the presentations and commented on the efforts of the children and staff in producing such a successful event.

Everyone agreed it was an excellent day out, leaving with the firm intention of returning next year for an even bigger event to coincide with the 2012 “real” Olympics in London!
