PREPARATORY DEPARTMENT

Extra-Curricular Activities

Extra-curricular activities are an essential and integral part of your daughter's education. Each girl at MSJ Preparatory Department benefits from a balance of academic, artistic, physical and recreational activities which will help her develop her confidence and self-esteem.

Extra-curricular activities
Piano lessons at Malvern St James
An after school club is run by the Preparatory Department Housemistress' from 3.10pm onwards for the benefit of parents who cannot collect their children when school finishes. Pupils in Years 3-6 who remain in school after lessons have finished for the day will automatically attend either the After School Club or any activities, including prep. Pupils in the Pre-Prep Department may choose to attend an activity, otherwise will automatically be sent to the After School Club if parents do not collect them.

Pupils remaining on school premises after 6.00pm will be escorted to Batsford Boarding House where facilities are available for pupils to relax or complete prep should they wish to.

At weekends there is a busy and varied programme of matches, activities and outdoor pursuits.

Ships

Malvern St James has Ships for school competitive events. The current fleet at Malvern St James consists of Gloucester (royal blue), Illustrious (white), Trenchant (red) and Triumph (dark blue).

The Ship system involves inter-ship competitions in Sport, Drama and Music. Sports Day is also run on a Ships' basis. All girls are expected to attend inter-ship competitions.

Each term rivalry is encouraged between the Ships to win the Admirals' Cup. This trophy is awarded to the Ship that has gained the most points during the term. There are two categories in which points can be gained:

  • Merits and Distinctions
  • Success in Inter-ship competitions

A Housemistress Admiral, a Captain, a Vice Captain and a Skipper (Preparatory Department), lead each ship. All other staff are allocated to Ships. Captains and Admirals meet every half term to discuss policy and new ideas. Ships' meetings are also held each half term. Ships should make contact with their namesake vessel, and reciprocal visits may be made between our own ships and RN representatives.
