Years 7 and 8 Experience Roman Life

Year 7 and 8 girls enjoyed a day spent at the Corinium Museum in Cirencester and Chedworth Villa. At the Museum, girls experienced a hands-on session to learn about four individual Romans from replica artefacts, after which they were able to read their tombstones. They also had time to explore the Roman garden, reconstructed rooms and shops as well as the many displays, including games, jewellery, religion and mosaics.

The idyllic location of Chedworth Villa lent itself very well to a picnic, followed by an interesting guided tour which included a bath house, latrine, hypocausts and shrine. Everyone had seen the famous hare mosaic in the Cirencester Museum and at Chedworth several girls were delighted to see a real hare skipping along the path towards them!

Olivia Allen, Year 8 said, “The Museum was full of Roman objects and beautiful mosaics. There were also lots of activities for us to do and very realistic wax models of Roman figures. I particularly enjoyed the workshop on Roman life, where we had to translate Roman tombstones and work out what sort of person somebody was by the objects they had.”

Alice Elt , Year 8 agreed, “We had lots of fun on this trip and learned a lot. We had to look carefully for answers to our questions and it was enjoyable, with games and interesting facts that we can never forget”

Mrs Baird, Head of Classics, concluded ‘This was a very worthwhile trip as girls were able to explore the evidence for themselves and make deductions based on what they saw. It was a very useful, enjoyable and thankfully rain-free day.'
