Trip to The Globe Theatre

The last A2 Drama revision lesson of the term took place at a very exciting location - The Globe Theatre in London. The group travelled to the South Bank and had a leisurely walk beside the Thames so the girls could see The National Theatre, The British Film Institute, Tate Modern and other famous landmarks. They were enthralled by the beach created for the 60th Year of The Festival of Britain, complete with sand and beach huts and, further down, by the sand sculptures on the side of the river.

The seats at the Globe were in the gentlemen's box, which was decorated with classical murals and was in close proximity to the stage. Ms Rhodes said ‘In Shakespeare's time it would have been for the richer members of the audience and we were amused to look down to see the modern day groundlings who were in the sunshine, unlike us in the shade! It was wonderful to realise that we were in the same space as a set of playwrights , Shakespeare foremost amongst them, who entertained a town and electrified a culture with plays that would last forever.

The production of ‘All's Well That Ends Well' was most entertaining and gave us all an insight into the original performance conditions. It was colourful, wise and beautiful.

The after performance discussion was very informative. Two of the actors answered questions, some of which were from our girls and gave us their experience of performing at The Globe and why they loved it. They shared amusing anecdotes about low flying pigeons and helicopter pilots waving to the actors on the day of the Royal Wedding. The girls found the discussion most valuable.

The journey home gave us time to reflect on a most enjoyable and educational day, a great way to learn!'
