Hoist The Colours

Hoist The Colours

This term the A2 Drama group performed their devised play, ‘Hoist The Colours', to a packed audience in the Drama Centre. This was the group's examination play which they researched and wrote themselves. They chose the story of Ann Bonny, a famous woman pirate, as their starting point. The characters were an unlikely group of women who took over a ship and its captain and all became women pirates with amusing and finally disastrous results!

The play was very well received, with one audience member commenting, ‘The play had real pace and drive – a sense of the story unfolding and moving towards a definite climax. We wanted to know what was going to happen to these characters. Really good physical comedy, burlesque and slap-stick underlined the relationship between men and women in the period.

I really appreciated the superb “twist” at the end. The hanging was extremely well staged and the cast managed to make the audience experience the horror of it without losing the comedy.'
