A Midsummer Night's Dream - a review by Mrs Fisher

“Dangerously Funny!” “I loved it!” “Everyone was Amazing!”

The show opened with the familiar strains of ‘The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies' and, sure enough, a group of quiet, timid ballerina fairies danced onto the stage waking everyone from their slumbers. What we weren't expecting were the ‘Lost Boy' style, rugged, superior fairies to scare them away and thus the tone of the play was set. The newly engaged Royals, (apropos Will and Kate!), introduced us to the Lovers; the stroppy, mobile phone addicted, teenagers who, in defiant mood, fled to the forest to defy their elders. Love texts sent from one lover to another didn't prevent the fighting between them, all of which was very physical and hilariously funny. The love potion added to the confusion of the characters, as Puck and Oberon watched from the vantage point of the swing, seeing Demetrius and Lysander waking, their devotion to the wrong girl clearly spelt out by the sliding across the stage and their deep, besotted voices!

The amount of work invested in this production was clear for all to see. The idea of a play containing ‘something for everyone' shone through. The acting was outstanding. There was a real sense of ownership from the cast as they threw themselves into their roles and brought the scenes alive. The story was beautifully told, the characterisation was highly distinctive and the dancing was beautiful. The rich set, the detailed costumes and the atmospheric lighting added to the wonder and illusion of the whole production. The show exuded energy, enthusiasm and fun; real entertainment for all.
