Sixth Form Study Day at the Ashmolean Museum

Classics Trips & Visits

On Tuesday 3 October, Year 13 Classicists attended an excellent Sixth Form Study Day at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford.

Study Days are designed to enrich and support delivery of the A Level curriculum and offer unique access to The Ashmolean’s collections with museum curators and University of Oxford academics including university-style lectures and practical workshops in smaller groups.

In the morning, we heard lectures on religion in Ancient Greece and Roman villas in Britain and in the afternoon, we attended small workshops on Athenian Vases and  sculptures. Girls were encouraged to think like archaeologists and ask questions of objects to reach likely conclusions.

We were especially lucky to have master classes from Professor Bert Smith in the Cast Gallery and Dr Thomas Mannock  in the Vase Gallery and Handling Room about how to observe objects closely.

The girls responded well to quite demanding questions and found the day very stimulating and enjoyable.
