News from the Classics Department
The Classics Department has made use of several opportunities to stretch and challenge girls this term. On Thursday 4 February, the Classical Civilisation AS group attended a very entertaining and illuminating lecture, organised by the Gloucestershire Classical Association and held at Dean Close School in Cheltenham. It was given by Professor Ken Dowden from the University of Birmingham and was entitled ‘Recipe: How to write an Odyssey'.
On Thursday 3 March the AS Latin girls attended a Latin Study Morning at Monmouth School. Sessions on language and literature provided an opportunity to see other Latin students in action and were an excellent stimulus for classroom discussions.
Finally, we are delighted to announce that Eve Garland Hellewell, Year 11, gained First Prize in the Intermediate Level of the ARLT (Association for Latin Teaching) Reading Competition. Pupils recorded a passage of Latin from Virgil’s Aeneid and it was sent off to the ARLT for judging. The adjudicators commented ‘This year the standard of entries was very high and it was not easy for the judges to make their final decisions. We congratulate all the entrants and their teachers on their efforts. It was clear that a great deal of hard work, preparation and thought had gone into all the recordings.’
