Latin Reading Competition
On Tuesday 1 March selected girls from Years 8 and 11 represented Malvern St James in the Gloucestershire Latin and Greek Reading Competition which was held at Cheltenham Ladies College.
During the previous weeks of practice, all of the girls improved their Latin reading and eventually achieved greater understanding of the words they were saying. This is a good skill at every level. The older girls were able to appreciate the beauty and dramatic literary effects of the passages of Virgil and Ovid and the younger girls, as a consequence of repeating their parts, are now able to fluently recite short passages of Latin.
It was an enjoyable afternoon and a very worthwhile undertaking, particularly as our girls performed extremely well and scooped several prizes. In the Junior Latin duologue, Mia Greenland and Ani King gained 3rd prize. MSJ excelled in the Intermediate Latin section, with Imogen Townsend winning 1st prize and Liza Bayankina 2nd prize. In the Senior Latin section, Eve Garland Hellewell was awarded 2nd prize and Imogen Townsend 3rd prize.
All the girls who took part deserve congratulations: Tilly Broadhurst, Ibble Watson, Emily Cox , Georgia Hughes, Mia Greenland, Ani King, Hetty Meen, Ellie Moore, Ella Rice and Tolu Onadele, Eve Garland Hellewell and Imogen Townsend and Liza Bayankina. Well done to all for performing so well and being great ambassadors for our School!
