Riding

Since 2010, the MSJ Equestrian Team has represented the School at Junior & Senior level in Eventing, Show Jumping, Dressage and JWS (Jumping With Style). The School supports and encourages competitive riding at all levels, entering School teams across all disciplines. 50% of competition entry fees are covered by the School for MSJ Team Riders and we offer Riding Scholarships at Year 9 and Year 12.

Riding Successes

MSJ has enjoyed great success, in our region & beyond:

  • Stonar: Inter-Schools One Day Event; 1st prize and shield in the 90cm U18 class against a tough field of over 35 schools. 
  • Princethorpe 2014 Dressage wins and 2013 Eventing wins
  • Bloxham
  • Hartpury: 2014 JWS and Dressage wins
  • Kings Equestrian Centre: 2013, 2014 and 2015, Show Jumping and Dressage wins
  • Headington Schools Show Jumping
  • Addington Manor Equestrian Centre, NSEA Championships
  • Bury Farm, County Championships and Qualifiers
  • Rectory Farm: 2015 Show Jumping
  • Imogen Gloag represented GB in 2013 in Junior European Eventing Championships; the team finished 7th overall and Imogen finished 2nd Best Brit!
  • Blenheim Horse Trials: CCI 3 Star
  • Izzy Taylor represented GB in 2015, coming individual 7th in the Eventing Championships
  • Eve Hobbs has qualified for the 2016 Mitsubishi Cup

Provision

Good tuition is provided for all abilities with regular team training for all disciplines. Parents of MSJ can take advantage of great, bespoke livery facilities with Marlbrook Farm Equestrian Centre and Birch Farm Livery and Equestrian Excursions are organised e.g. Badminton Horse Trials.

If you don’t have your own horse, at our excellent partner facility Hayswood Stables you can train with your personally chosen pony. You will be able to take BHS AI Qualifications and there are in-house competitions to take part in.

For girls that do have their own horse we partner with two outstanding livery providers; Marlbrook Farm Equestrian Centre and Birch Farm Livery. Here, individual or group tuition at all levels is given by professional, accredited instructors. The expert tuition is bespoke to the rider and targeted at the specific disciplines of Dressage, Show Jumping and Cross Country.

There are many opportunities to compete with School teams at NSEA competitions at local, regional and national level and you can practice together as a team.

Riding Scholars

MSJ offers Riding Scholarships at Year 9 and Year 12 and featuring mentoring and coaching sessions and a fitness programme supported by a personal trainer at MSJ Sports Centre.

Riding Scholars are expected to be committed to representing Malvern St James at School equestrian events and to encourage other riders within the School

There are many opportunities to compete with the School Team in the different disciplines of Eventing, Show Jumping, Dressage and JWS (Jumping With Style):

  • Local, County, Regional, National level:Team & Individual classes
  • National Schools Eventing Series – launched 2011
  • Hurstpierpoint College Schools’ Show Jumping - Hickstead All England Show Ground

We are keen to ensure all riders have the opportunity to represent MSJ and the School will provide for 50% of two classes per Rider, per competition, for Riders / horse or pony combinations that fulfil the selection criteria.
