At MSJ, Mathematics is fun! It is also a deeply satisfying subject; tackle a problem and get a feeling of great satisfaction from getting it right and knowing it is right and being able to confidently move on to something else.
Our students feel comfortable in Mathematics lessons and they are confident because they each learn at an appropriate level and pace for them.
Mathematics underpins almost every other subject on the curriculum and is relevant to the wider world in every way. Did you know that the Internet is based on the theory of prime numbers? Mathematics helps the development of pupils’ learning and thinking skills through problem solving, pattern recognition, dealing with abstract concepts, logical inference.
“Pure mathematics is, in its way, the poetry of logical ideas”. Albert Einstein
GCSE is designed to give both a good grounding in everyday Mathematics and a firm foundation for further study at GCE AS and A Level. IGCSE Mathematics is recognised as equivalent, grade for grade, to a UK GCSE and has the same status in terms of university entry requirements. Foundation Tier papers are targeted at Grades C-G and Higher Tier papers are targeted at Grades A*-D. This allows students of all abilities the opportunity to gain good results.
At A Level, when studying Core Mathematics, you will be extending your knowledge of such topics as algebra and trigonometry as well as studying new topics such as calculus. Statistics is about analysing and summarising numerical data in order to arrive at conclusions about it. You will extend the range of probability problems that you started for GCSE, by using new mathematical techniques. In Mechanics you will learn how to describe the motion of objects and how they respond to forces acting upon them, from cars in the street to satellites revolving around a planet. You will learn about mathematical modelling, that is, turning a complicated physical problem into a simpler one which can be analysed and solved using mathematical methods.
