English

English is driven by our core belief that the worlds of books, arts, contemporary writing and a vast cultural heritage are immensely enriching to each student’s understanding and appreciation of life.

We nurture every pupil’s grasp of the world that surrounds her through gently-guided engagement with the most stimulating resources available, and encourage her to articulate her own thoughts and creativity through interest in her own writing. Everything we do is determined by our aspiration to make English an enriching and life-enhancing experience that lays important foundations for the future.

Through an original and interesting series of modules tailored to the needs of a cultured and aspirational school, we aim to ensure that each girl will grow to:

  • enjoy reading
  • write proficiently for all purposes
  • articulate ideas effectively
  • think creatively and independently
  • appreciate literature and its varied contexts

Our curriculum offer is enriched by a well-integrated programme of events, trips and
activities, for example:

  • Y7 Creative Writing Day at Witley Court
  • Y8 Poets and Painters Day at Wightwick Manor
  • Y9 Shakespeare Day in Stratford
  • Y12-13 Study Days on specific texts
  • A sixth-form day of cultural experiences in Oxford
  • Film evenings
  • Use of ‘Digital Theatre Plus’ in school
  • Theatre Trips (in 2015 these included ‘The History Boys’, ‘Macbeth’, ‘My Perfect Mind’ and ‘The Merchant of Venice’)
