Curiosity is at the heart of the Library vision at MSJ. The aim of our Professional Librarians is to provide a service that empowers all pupils to find out, explore and discover ideas for themselves. This is achieved through the integration of information literacy skills teaching into the curriculum along with opportunities for independent learning.
We aim to develop an attitude of scholarship that extends beyond the confines of timetabled lessons. Pupils are provided with access to reliable online databases as well as the extensive print collection. A current awareness board also enables visitors to engage with current global debates.
The spacious environment supports both individual and collaborative study as well as whole class teaching. With access to a suite of computers, pupils can choose how to approach their work and research.
A love of reading is an attitude that is fostered in the Library. Our senior book club has a lively and opinionated meeting every week. The group always has animated and good humoured discussions around the latest authors, plots, characters and film adaptations. Year 7 and 8 pupils also enjoy entering competitions, quizzes and book challenges.
Collaboration with academic departments ensures that relevant and targeted resources are available as well as also having the flexibility to respond to individual project requests. Close contact with teaching staff ensures that pupils have the opportunity to develop their learning and research skills within the context of a variety of academic subjects.
On arrival all pupils are provided with an induction session to orientate them with the service and the layout of the library.
In addition to the main space there is a Silent Study that individuals can use if they require a quieter environment.
Pupils can take advantage of the extended opening hours and choose to study in the library in the evening after supper once they reach Year 11. Support is provided by an evening supervisor.
And if you have a problem…. we encourage girls to "just come and ask"; the Library team is happy to provide support and share their skills.
