Under the guiding influence of Ms Detnon, Housemistress, Batsford is a home from home for our younger boarders.
Set in its own grounds with a beautiful garden to play in, it is a wonderful setting to come back to at the end of the school day when the girls fill it with chatter and activity.
Ms Detnon has had pastoral care at the heart of her teaching positions in a variety of schools, having been Housemistress to choristers at Exeter Cathedral School and Assistant Head and Head of Pastoral Care at Wellingborough School before moving to Argentina where she taught English and skiing and was the English Head of a bilingual junior school in Patagonia.
The girls are happy, friendly, playful and above all, an extended family. They all have their own space but living together is what we do and what we can appreciate; the bonds of friendship created here run deep. We often have flexi boarders or sleep-overs which adds to the rich mix of personalities in the house. While each night’s routine is the same, it often has a different twist.
We enjoy many activities in the evening after school, we have sports clubs, drama club or we play games in the house, we create dance routines, do crafts, make cards, sew, sit and talk and when the weather is nice we love to play outside in the garden. Feet-off-ground (FOG) time before lights out is an important part of our routine. FOG time enables the girls to get into a quiet state of mind before lights out, offering reading time, reflection, chats with Ms D or anyone else on duty.
There is a core team of Housemistress, Deputy and Resident Tutor living and working in the house, along with the assistance of a range of gappers. Sarah, our cleaner, is such a star and we come home from school to find our teddies arranged on our beds waiting for us as we come through the door!
