Boarding Ethos

Holistic development of each girl

We aim to provide an environment where every boarder can develop their intellectual talents, social, physical and emotional skills through well-structured study time, access to staff and other pupils and participation in activities within an atmosphere that values effort as well as actual achievement. We offer a range of activities and opportunities related to age and maturity that will assist in the personal, social and cultural development of each boarder, which has a pastoral care at its core. Our full and varied programme of activities further reflects our boarding ethos and its purpose to widen the girls’ experiences beyond that which they might enjoy within the restrictions of today’s busy family life. The girls also enjoy forging strong friendships which last a lifetime.

Openness and trust

We want each boarder to feel comfortable to approach any member of the School community (staff or girl), confident in the knowledge that she will be treated and respected as an individual. To facilitate this, we strive to create an honest and tolerant atmosphere, which is nurtured through positive staff and pupil relationships.  

Taking responsibility

We encourage each boarder to take responsibility, for herself, for others and for her living environment. Our policy of continuous refurbishment is aimed at providing accommodation that is comfortable, clean, safe and attractive and is suited to the needs of boarders whilst ensuring adequate levels of privacy. The Prefect structure within the boarding Houses and across the School helps develop qualities of leadership and the ability to work as part of a team. 

Structure

We foster robust structures to ensure the smooth running of the School and the boarding community, for the good of everyone and to protect individuals from harm. We endeavour to ensure that any sanctions, which may be applied, are fair, reasonable and consistent; expected and perceived to be so by the girls. 

Compassionate and down-to-earth

We acknowledge that there will always be special circumstances in which a boarder is living, learning and growing up. We recognise that girls will face struggles as well as successes during their time with us. Staff with a wealth of experience are on hand to support girls no matter what the circumstances. Every effort is made to work with parents to quickly and successfully overcome any issues; typical of the important, working partnership we strive to establish between boarding staff, parents and girls.
