Careers and Universities

The Careers Department works with the girls to help make their aspirations a reality. A variety of activities are on offer to help the girls make informed decisions as they approach their key transition points

Individual advice is available on choosing the best course and Universities and on the application process. Although many of our girls apply to top ranking Universities in the UK they are also supported in exploring international options including America, Canada, Hong Kong, Australia and New Zealand.

For students applying to Oxbridge and for Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Science and Pharmacy, mock interviews are offered as part of preparation for Higher Education in the Autumn Term of Year 13.

Although the majority of our girls progress straight on to University, advice is also provided on job hunting, gap years and apprenticeships to suit individual preferences.

A Higher Education and Careers section on our intranet assists the girls to undertake independent research, exploring both careers and university research suggestions and the Higher Education Library within the main Library contains up-to-date university prospectuses, and the latest books on university research.

A biennial Careers & Higher Education Fair hosts a range of Employers, Gap Year Providers and Universities to enable our girls in Year 9 to 13 to engage with the representatives in order to inspire them as to the diverse range of opportunities available to them.

Working in collaboration with the Alumnae Liaison Fiona Meredith, has led to the establishment of Careers Lectures which take place each term over the course of the Academic Year, previous Lecturers have included Otto Scriven a Digital Business Consultant, Ellie Kirby a former Head Girl and graduate of Lancaster University, Melanie Dawes discussing her Career as an Economist and Government Adviser and a talk by the husband of an Old Girl, Derek Walker, Director of Careers at Saïd Business School Oxford University. An interactive Medical workshop provided by a current Medical Student Rebecca Fisher, proved very popular both for our girls and for students visiting from a local school.
