It is my privilege to welcome you all as the Head Girl for the forthcoming year. Malvern St James has given me so many opportunities to discover myself, my passions and what I want to do in life. I feel I would not have received these invaluable lessons elsewhere and I know that at the end of the year I shall leave a confident, capable woman, fully prepared for whatever future challenges I may face.
I wish you the best for your time here at MSJ and fully encourage you to make the most of the many opportunities you will have. There is so much to do, whether it be joining one of the many sports teams, taking up one of the wide range of languages on offer, getting involved with Choir or Drama or taking part in the annual MasterChef contest, amongst many other things.
There is never any day of the week when there is not a wealth of activities going on including D of E, Young Enterprise, Model United Nations, debating and public speaking, sports, art, drama, and music, or STEM activities. There are around 60 clubs, societies and groups at MSJ – and if there’s something you are interested in and it’s not currently offered, you will be given support to set up a club or society. At the weekends, music concerts, sports fixtures or drama productions are held regularly. I have been given a tailored education here and you will be given the same; you will become the best version of yourself thanks to everything MSJ offers.
During my time here I have learnt and been encouraged to balance a range of subjects alongside my chosen extra-curriculars. At A-Levels I have chosen to study Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Product Design. These subjects are very specialised, so activities outside the classroom have played a vital role in helping me to become more well-rounded. I did the DofE programme and loved it. It was both challenging and enlightening and I learnt so much about myself and what I am capable of doing, along with essential team working, dedication and mindfulness of others. As an avid Lacrosse player, I cannot express enough the benefits of taking up a team sport. It allows you to have a break from academic studies and form friends easily in other years.
Boarding is such an integrated part of the school community and I fully encourage you to try it at some point during your time here at MSJ. We are surrounded by boarding mistresses who care for us like their own children and your boarding friends who become like family. There are lots of activities at weekends open to boarders and day-girls such as theatre trips, rock-climbing, kayaking, ice-skating, and visiting attractions like Harry Potter World (great fun!). There are socials all the time and some of my favourites are the Reeling Society events in preparation for socials at Eton and Radley and Sixth Form Wine Tasting Society evenings. Boarding in Sixth Form is perfect for giving you an experience of independence (and learning how to work a washing machine!) before starting university or wherever your future may take them.
You will never be told you cannot do something or that you’re not good enough, because every girl excels at something. From academic studies to sports to art, Malvern St James will help you to discover your passions and nurture them. You will receive a first-class education here that will set you up for life.
I love being Head Girl and along with my deputies, Liberty Wilkinson and Andrea Rugasira, we hope you love Malvern St James as much as we do.
