I believe MSJ to be an exceptional place for learning and living. Our values today reflect those of our founding schools, set up in the nineteenth century by pioneering proponents of women’s education to provide a first class education that develops the whole person. In this inspirational setting MSJ continues a fine heritage of academic rigour, outstanding enrichment and leadership opportunities, preparing girls for rewarding careers and lives beyond school.
If I had to sum this school up in just a few adjectives, it would be: energetic, quirky, purposeful, warm, generous and ambitious. At the heart of everything we do is our belief that every girl matters. Every girl is known here; she is an individual who can achieve whatever she wants. We encourage and support our girls to ‘become you’ – to grow into themselves, to become the person they want to become, and to embrace every opportunity available to them.
We are an academic school that prepares girls extremely well for examinations. But we also know that life is not just about the ability to do well in exams. Along with academic confidence, the most successful individuals will have at their fingertips a wider set of soft skills. Our girls need to show empathy, to work collaboratively and be good at problem-solving. They need to be resilient, confident and adaptable. The wellbeing of our girls is vitally important to us and the pastoral care we offer here is second to none - we are with them every step of the way to teach, guide, and mentor them. We know that if we create the right environment and support network, we give every girl the chance to flourish. Our happy and friendly school community means girls are well-equipped to live and thrive in today’s ever-changing world.
We aim to foster an ethos of aspiration and a ‘can-do’ culture and I enjoy watching our girls grow in confidence and self-awareness, blossoming in to young women who will go on to study at some of the most prestigious universities in the world, lead meaningful careers, and who are thoroughly prepared to embrace life’s challenges. They will be the ones to change and influence our future, whether that be through scientific discoveries, entertaining and informing us through the arts, mitigating the effects of climate change, impacting the political landscape, or influencing the way we do business.
Our size means that we can offer each girl an individually tailored school experience. There’s always so much happening here. There are over 60 clubs, societies and enrichment opportunities, which means that there is something to fire the imagination of every individual. Our enrichment programme is as long as it is broad, and has something to fire the imagination of every individual: clubs for budding engineers and scientists, extra-curricular languages, drama, music, Leiths, journalism, photography, sport of every kind, Young Enterprise, Debating and Model United Nations … to name but a few. This is just one of the reasons why we were judged to be ‘Excellent’ in our ISI Inspection in May 2017 for both academic achievement and all-round personal development. The inspectors said that MSJ girls excel in teamwork and problem-solving, shine in academic enrichment, work hard to achieve targets that they set themselves, communicate fluently and persuasively, and relish an academic challenge. The inspectors picked up on the sense of joy and laughter that plays through this school. We do have fun: there is a warmth here, a gentle humour, a sense of self-deprecation. Life is better if we can laugh at the stumbles as well as the conquests. Our girls work hard but have fun on the way, making lifelong friends and memories.
Do come to see for yourselves – only a visit can give you a real sense of life at MSJ! I would love you to visit and look forward to welcoming you to Malvern St James where I hope you will be as impressed as I am by our happy, poised and confident girls and young women.
